Tomorrow we hit the road fulfilling a 30 year-old promise to return to Michigan. This promise involves beer, the UM vs MSU tailgater, and probably more beer. We are told by family and friends in MI and MN that the colors are changing now. We are hoping to catch the colors while driving the northern route and then returning on the southern.

Your itinerary is awesome! I only have one recommendation to add for you. Since you mentioned beer (more that once) and Albion, a short drive will get you to Marshall Mi, home of The Dark Horse Brewery. Definitely a "colorful" joint....quirky, unique....for some reason I think it might be your kind of place. Great food, spectacular beer, definately worth the 15 minute drive from Albion. You can check it out online and get the hours and address. Trust me, they do it right. Check it out and give us a critique. If you get there, take a photo of the colorful ceiling. If you don't get there....lie to me, tell me you did, and make up a colorful story.
