October 8 - North Dakota isn't much different than eastern Montana. The color is found primarily on the ground as vertical vegetation is scarce. But they have spectacular geological color arrays. We stopped at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park's Painted Canyon. The visitor overlook of the Badlands was a nice respite from the tan and brown landscape of the first 4 hours of our trip.
"Badlands- Huge house-sized masses of earth shear from bluffs and creep downhill. Unlike landslides, these slumpblocks remain intact, and move so slowly that most shear scars weather away before the blocks fnally come to rest. This collapse can be seen at the foot of this viewpoint and throughout the Park."
